Reciprocating Gas Compressors
Blackmer HD Series
BLACKMER Oil-Free Gas Compressors for Industrial Gas Applications
BLACKMER HD Compressor Series | Standard Features
Engineered for Durability and Performance
Ductile Iron Cylinder and Head
Constructed from ductile iron, the cylinder and head provide superior strength, enhanced corrosion resistance, and greater resilience to thermal shock compared to conventional cast iron—ideal for demanding applications.
Water-Cooled Cylinder and Head (HDL Models)
HDL models feature water-cooled cylinders and heads to effectively reduce operating temperatures, extending component life and ensuring consistent performance in high-duty cycles.
High-Efficiency Valves
Standard valve plates are made from high-performance PEEK, a self-lubricating material with low mass and excellent wear resistance. The slight flexibility of PEEK allows for superior sealing and durability, even under abuse, outperforming traditional metal plates. Stainless steel valve options are also available for specialized applications.
Note: BLACKMER HD080, HD160, and HD170 Series models are equipped with TNT-12 impregnated steel valve plates and bumpers for enhanced durability.
Extra-Thick PTFE Piston Rings
BLACKMER HD compressors feature PTFE piston rings that are twice as thick as those used in competitive models. This added thickness provides a larger wear surface, resulting in improved sealing and significantly extended ring life.
O-Ring Seals Between the Cylinder and Head
Buna-N O-ring head seals come standard and provide positive sealing under all operating conditions. Other material options include, PTFE, FKM, neoprene, and ethylene-propylene.
Precision Design for Superior Sealing and Reliability
Precision Design for Superior Sealing and Reliability
Precise Leakage Control
BLACKMER HD compressors are available in Single-Seal (no distance piece), Double-Seal (single distance piece), and Triple-Seal (double distance piece) configurations—offering tailored leakage control to suit a wide range of gas-handling needs. These designs help minimize product contamination and maintain gas stream purity in critical applications.
Leak-Free Cylinder Head Design
Center head bolts are engineered to avoid penetrating the gas chamber, eliminating the need for head bolt gaskets. This innovative design removes a potential leakage point, increasing reliability and reducing maintenance requirements.
One-Piece Piston with Positive-Locking Nut
The durable, one-piece piston is secured to the piston rod with a single positive-locking nut. This robust design offers superior strength and simplifies maintenance, outperforming multi-piece piston assemblies that rely on multiple fasteners and are more prone to loosening under stress.
Built-In Features for Enhanced Longevity and Flexibility
ANSI Flanged Connections
Most HD Series Compressors feature ANSI-standard flanged connections, allowing for maximum flexibility in piping layout and simplified system integration.
Heavy-Duty Steel Components
Steel wrist pins supported by steel needle bearings ensure long-lasting performance, especially in high-load and severe operating conditions.
Self-Adjusting PTFE Piston Rod Seals
These seals maintain optimal sealing pressure while minimizing friction, ensuring oil-free compression and extended service life.
Wear-Resistant Crosshead Assemblies
Ductile iron crossheads are precision-machined with dedicated lubrication channels and ports. This design ensures thorough lubrication, reduces wear, and eliminates galling for reliable long-term operation.
Pressure-Lubricated Crankcase
The crankcase features pressure lubrication via a self-reversing oil pump directly driven by the crankshaft. Oil is distributed to all bearing surfaces, including the crosshead, and a spin-on automotive-style oil filter is standard for easy maintenance.
Protective Epoxy Coating
A specially formulated epoxy coating protects the entire interior of the crankcase, providing resistance against wear, corrosion, and harsh environmental conditions.
No Yellow Metals
BLACKMER HD compressors are constructed without brass or copper components, eliminating the risk of corrosion from aggressive or acidic gases and ensuring long-term reliability in harsh gas-handling environments.

BLACKMER HD Compressors | Specifications – Single-Stage Models
Compression Ratio and Temperature Considerations
Compression ratios are typically limited by the resulting discharge temperature. High compression ratios—especially when handling certain gases—can generate excessive heat, often exceeding 350°F (177°C). To ensure safe and efficient operation, the compressor’s duty cycle must allow for adequate cooling intervals between operating periods. This helps prevent excessive temperatures that could compromise performance or component longevity.
